What is a VPN and how does this work?

Using a VPN for Secure Browsing on Your Mobile Device

Since smartphones became part of our lives, Android has grown to be the most widely used operating system worldwide. However, its popularity has also made it the most frequent target for hackers. Being the most used doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most secure.

In many cases, the preinstalled apps on our mobile devices collect large amounts of data about our internet activity, which can be shared with third parties. So, how can we prevent this? By using a VPN for Android.

What Is a Mobile VPN?

We often associate VPNs with computers, but they can also be used on mobile devices to greatly enhance your security and privacy.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN), as its name suggests, is a private transmission network that prevents devices from being tracked. It establishes a direct, encrypted connection between your device and the server, protecting your data from hackers or unauthorized access.

Benefits of using a VPN

Using a VPN on your phone offers much more than just added protection for your identity and sensitive information, helping us browse in a much more secure way but also prevents content censorship and allows remote access to your devices.

We have already commented some benefits of using a VPN, now lets see some of the key advantages of this technology:

  • Safe use of public Wi-Fi networks

When you run out of mobile data, you may need to connect to public Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, doing so without protection exposes your device to many risks: data theft, Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, malware infections, or stolen transmitted information.

Using a VPN lets you securely connect to public Wi-Fi by acting as a private tunnel between both ends of the communication,  making it very difficult for hackers to access your data.

  • Avoid censorship and price discrimination

Many websites use our location to control de content you can access. For instance, some countries block or censor certain websites, while some online stores practice price discrimination ( showing different prices on products and services based on your region).

With VPNs we can avoid these restrictions, accessing any content we want, bypassing location blocking or changing your virtual location.

  • Financial security

When we shop online or access our bank accounts, all of our information can be easily exposed to hackers, which could end up in identity theft.

Using a VPN, we obtain a safer connection for online transactions and managing your finances.

To sum up, by hiding your IP address we become technically invisible with all of the advantages that it brings. Tough when we install a VPN app, we´re trusting the developer with your data.

So, be very careful with free VPN apps, which may be unreliable or insecure. Even trustworthy ones can be too slow for practical use. Always read the Terms and Conditions carefully, especially the sections on privacy and data handling.

At last, it is important to highlight that in most countries VPNs for Android are completely legal, except from countries like China, North Korea, Iran, Russia, Turkey, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, where they have strict regulations or bans on VPN usage.
